Biomedical Researcher — Extreme Environment Physiology
Study how the human body holds up in environments it was not built for — sustained low gravity, high radiation flux, confinement, and thermal extremes — and turn that into countermeasures the operational divisions can actually deploy.

What the role is responsible for.
- Design and run physiological studies under analogue and operational conditions.
- Own protocol development and the ethics submission that accompanies it.
- Develop and validate diagnostic markers for early detection of environmental injury.
- Work with Aerospace on countermeasure requirements for surface and orbital crews.
- Maintain BSL-3 discipline and contribute to the containment training rotation.
What we need you to bring.
- Doctorate in physiology, biomedical science, or a related field, with independent study experience.
- Prior work under a formal human-subjects research framework.
- BSL-3 or equivalent containment experience, with current competence.
- Statistical fluency appropriate to small-n physiological study design.
- Eligibility for sponsored Secret vetting.
Useful, not essential.
- Aerospace, hyperbaric, polar, or military operational physiology background.
- Experience with wearable or implantable physiological monitoring.
- Prior countermeasure development that reached operational use.
We read the preferred list as a description of a useful background, not a checklist. Candidates who meet the required list and none of the preferred are regularly hired.
Who you would be joining.
Human Performance sits on the Cambridge biomedical campus with diagnostics, neuroadaptive interfaces, and containment under the same accreditation. The group works closely with Aerospace crew health.
What to know before you apply.
Containment work requires medical surveillance enrolment. Some study detail is disclosed only after clearance.
All candidates undergo comprehensive vetting. Reasonable accommodation is available at any stage — say so in your first note and it will be arranged. We do not use unverified third-party recruiters, and we never ask a candidate for a fee.
